Individual health insurance (also known as Private Medical Insurance or PMI) is, quite simply, coverage that an individual purchases for themselves and/or their family. Individual policies are often purchased with the advice of a professional insurance broker due to the complexity of coverage offerings and the premium cost.
Private Medical Insurance is very different to group health insurance, which is the type of insurance that is offered through an employer. Sometimes individual health insurance consumers have the option to pay extra for coverage of additional services such as maternity coverage.
Coverage in individual policies may be limited due to pre-existing conditions with certain kinds of medical care excluded as a result. This means that applicants for personal health insurance will sometimes need to complete some brief medical questions regarding your current state of health or ongoing conditions.
PMI works in the same way as any other type of insurance you may currently have - it's based on managing the risk of unforeseen circumstances. You pay your premium, either in monthly instalments or in one lump sum, so that if you fall ill or worse have an accident, you'll be able to receive any eligible medical treatment privately - avoiding any potential NHS waiting lists.
