Southampton based The Health Insurance Group sponsors Samaritans' RideLondon Team
Southampton based The Health Insurance Group is continuing its support of Samaritans by sponsoring its team taking part in the Prudential RideLondon race. The team of 134 riders will take to their bikes on Sunday 31st July and ride the gruelling 100-mile course, with 26,000 other amateur cyclists, through London and Surrey’s stunning countryside.
Brett Hill, Managing Director at The Health Insurance Group explains, “As an organisation we are concerned with health and wellbeing in the workplace. According to the TUC, someone is taken ill by stress at work every two minutes so it is vital that we find ways to prevent these problems and improve the mental health of our employees. Many may suffer in silence, but some of these employees may also be callers to the Samaritans. Just having someone to talk to can make all the difference, as we know from the Employee Assistance Programme helpline services we provide to clients, which can reduce stress-related time taken off work by over 50 per cent.
“It is also widely recognised that exercise and physical health, such as cycling, can have a positive impact on mental health. Samaritans is an extraordinary organisation that we are delighted to continue to support for the fourth year.”
Prudential RideLondon is the world’s greatest festival of cycling, developed by the Mayor of London and his agencies in partnership with Surrey County Council. It was first staged in August 2013 and follows a similar route to that of the London 2012 Olympic Road Cycling races. It starts in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and goes through the stunning country roads and hills of Surrey, before returning to the capital to finish in spectacular style on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.
"We are delighted that The Health Insurance Group are sponsoring our Samaritans Team cycle jerseys for the first time, having previously sponsored our running vests for three years" says Emma Burgess, Samaritans Events Fundraiser. "Their support continues to help us raise our profile with the public and means more funds can go to providing our helplines, which operate round the clock, every single day of the year. Everyone has moments in their life where they struggle and for some, this can lead to feeling hopeless and losing sight of being able to work through their problems. Talking can really help people to see a way through and Samaritans is there to give people the time and space to do this."
To continue their support of such an important charity, 14 members of staff from The Health Insurance Group will also be taking part in the London South Tough Mudder event in September to raise money for Samaritans. Tough Mudder is a 10-12 mile obstacle course designed and built by the British Special Forces, to test the all-round strength, stamina, physical fitness and mental grit. It is regularly referred to as ‘the toughest event on the planet.”
Every six seconds someone calls Samaritans. The charity’s 20,000 volunteers respond to more than 5.4 million requests for help a year. One of the ways the charity raises money is through people participating in events, such as RideLondon and the London Marathon.
